Golden light at Rome’s sunset.
Timelapse from Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, looking toward Ponte Sant’Angelo and the Vatican.
Time runs silently, and the sunset light, reflected on the water, together with the streetlamps of Ponte Sant’Angelo and Via della Conciliazione, with the dome of the Vatican in the background, creates a scene that makes you feel transported to another time.
This is a place I return to every time I visit Rome. And, strangely enough, at sunset it’s usually far less crowded than other parts of the Eternal City. Maybe because most people just walk past: too many places to see and too little time. And who stops for a full hour just to watch the light change?
Sometimes I’ve found myself almost alone here, with dusk bathing the air and the Tiber sliding beneath, like a slow thought. Watching this light is like letting all the noise fade away.
Next time you’re in Rome, gift yourself an hour here. Do nothing more than watch how sunset turns this part of the city into gold.
